Egypt has repeatedly slammed in recent years accusations of human rights abuses levelled by international human rights organisations

Egypt's Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Omar Marawan left Cairo Sunday for Geneva to attend the UN Human Rights Council's (UNHRC) Universal Periodic Review session on Egypt, slated for Wednesday.

The head of Egypt's National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) Mohamed Fayek accompanied Marawan to the UNHRC session.

The government, in preparation for the Geneva session, held a series of follow-up meetings with a number of ministries and civil society institutions to review the country's efforts in the human rights domain, affirmed Marawan.

The Egyptian government adheres to its international human rights commitments, Marawan said, noting that it implemented several recommendations adopted by the previous Universal Periodic Review session in 2014.

Egypt has repeatedly slammed in recent years accusations of human rights abuses levelled by international human rights organisations, rejecting foreign interference by rights groups in Egypt's domestic affairs.

Last week, the Egyptian parliament's foreign relations committee said that Egypt has recently been the target of systematic campaigns to tarnish the country's image with respect to human rights.

"Egypt rejects these flawed and politicised campaigns, and also rejects any form of interference in its internal affairs," a statement by the committee said, alluding to two recent reports, issued by the EU Parliament and the London-based Amnesty International, criticising the country's human rights situation.
