Niger's constitutional referendum holds 31 October

Niamey, Niger - Niger junta leader Salou Djibo Saturday signed a decree to convene the electorate for the referendum on the country's constitution for the 7th republic on 31 October. Each voter will have to answer 'yes' or 'no' to the question: 'Do you approve the draft constitution submitted to you?' according to the decree.

The referendum campaign will open Saturday, 16 October, and close 29 October.

On Friday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) presented a revised electoral register to Ousmane Cisse, Minister of Interior, Security, Decentralization and Religious Affairs.

Nearly 600,000 voters were added to the register, bringing the total number to about 6,600,000 for the upcoming polls.

The referendum will be followed by Parliamentary elections slated for January 2011 and presidential and legislative elections scheduled for next March.
