Stop the US/NATO Bombing of Libya: Money for Jobs, Housing, Healthcare, Education, Not War!

Since March 19, the United States military forces and its allies from several other imperialist countries including Canada, Britain, France and Italy, have been engaged in a massive bombing campaign against the North African state of Libya. Hundreds of civilians and government personnel have been killed in the attacks. Several billion dollars of Libyan property has been destroyed by the US/NATO bombing and hundreds of thousands of Libyan jobs, homes and other personal possessions have been eliminated by the airstrikes that are being carried out under the false claim of protecting civilians.

The so-called rebellion in Libya is backed by the Central Intelligence Agency as revealed in several articles published in the New York Times and other newspapers. Libya has the largest oil reserves on the African continent and is also a source of vast amounts of natural gas and other strategic resources coveted by the ruling classes in the U.S. and Western countries.

Libya has built up a tremendous national infrastructure over the last four decades since the revolution in 1969 that overthrew the Western-backed monarchy. A U.S. military base was closed after the revolution and the government in Libya has supported national liberation struggles throughout Africa and the world for decades. The government has also aided African American organizations such as the Nation of Islam and others over the years. It is the desire on the part of the imperialist countries to destroy Libya and bring it back under the total control of the U.S. and its allies in Europe.

The Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) condemns the latest U.S.-engineered war against this North African state. This represents the seventh theater of war being carried out by the Pentagon and their backers on Wall Street. MECAWI calls for the end of U.S. aggression in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Colombia, Palestine and now Libya. We demand that the trillion-plus dollars being spent on war every year be re-directed to provide the tens of millions of jobs needed in the U.S. and the re-building of the cities, suburbs, rural areas, educational sector and public services that have been gutted by the policies of the federal government which only serves the interests of the bankers and the defense contractors.

MECAWI is calling for the community in Detroit to come out to a public meeting on April 16 at 5:00pm to speak about their opposition to the war on Libya and other countries throughout the world and to plan further actions to shut down the war machine by building a mass movement of millions that will take control of the future destiny of the peoples of the U.S. and the world.

Any organization wanting to speak in opposition to the war should notify MECAWI. If they could write short statements about their views on U.S. aggression toward Libya it would facilitate the efficient organization of this community meeting.

Representatives of the media can contact MECAWI at the numbers listed above for detailed statements on the current situation involving U.S. aggression toward Libya and other geo-political regions throughout the world.

End US/NATO Attacks on Libya!!!
Money for Jobs, Not for War!
Bail Out the People, Not the Banks!
Shut Down the Pentagon War Machine!
