Foreign Ministry: Syria Welcomes U.S.-Russian Rapprochement during Kerry-Lavrov Talks

May 09, 2013

DAMASCUS, (SANA)- Syria welcomed the U.S.-Russian rapprochement which manifested itself during the talks between U.S. Secretary of State and Russian Foreign Minister in Moscow on May 7th, 2013, according to a statement issued by the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry on Thursday.

The statement pointed out that Syria's welcome of this rapprochement was based on its conviction of Russia's firm stance that is founded on the UN Charter and the rules of the international law, particularly the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and the principle of not using or threatening the use of force against the territories or political independence of any state.

"Syria stresses that the credibility of the U.S. position on adopting the political solution to the crisis in Syria lies in working seriously with its allies to halt the violence and terrorism and drain its sources so as to pave the way for launching the political dialogue," said the Foreign Ministry.

It added that Syria affirms that everybody should realize that Syrian people alone can determine their future and the constitutional system of their state without any foreign interference.

The statement noted the steps taken by the Syrian government towards implementing the political program that was proposed by President Bashar al-Assad based on the Geneva Communique in order to prepare for holding the comprehensive national dialogue conference in Damascus.
