An American journalist slams the administration of President Barack Obama for its campaign against whistleblowers who try to reveal its wrongdoings.

“The Obama administration has been the most difficult in regard to handling the so-called whistleblowers. They have taken extraordinary measures to guard against leaks,” said Abayomi Azikiwe, the editor of Pan-African News Wire, in an interview with Press TV’s U.S. Desk.

Azikiwe said that in his view people both in the U.S. and around the globe “need to know what the U.S. government is doing in regard to its security policies, its intelligence apparatus and its private and public affairs.”

He described former contractor to CIA and NSA Edward Snowden as someone who “is trying to expose the wrongdoings that are being carried out by our government.”

Azikiwe added that the reason why the White House is so angry about Snowden is that he revealed that Washington is not only spying on its enemies but also its own allies.

“This of course has caused tensions within the European Union and its relationship to the United States and this is why they (U.S. authorities) are so adamant about prosecuting Snowden not necessarily for leaks but for treason and what they called espionage.”

He also criticized the U.S. anti-terrorism program as “mis-directed.”

This program is in fact “designed more against the people who are resisting U.S. policies on an international basis as well as the domestic level. This program has nothing to do with law and with ethics but it has more to do with the concealment of the policy being carried out by the United States.”
