In Egypt the Muslim Brotherhood has remained steadfast in its demand that deposed President Mohamed Morsi be immediately released from detention and returned to political office. Meanwhile, the military-backed interim governing council has stated that it is near completion of appoints to the new cabinet.
Former Central Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency contract employee Edward Snowden has requested political asylum in Russia. Snowden met with human rights organizations and politicians on Friday July 12 at the airport where he has been staying for several weeks.
A convoy of AMISOM troops were attacked in the Somalian capital of Mogadishu on Friday July 12. Despite claims from the imperialist states and their allies in the region that the situation in Somalia is stable, unrest continues.
Finally, President Robert Mugabe of the Southern African state of Zimbabwe has declared that "Victory Is Ours", meaning the ruling ZANU-PF party. Zimbabwe will hold national elections on July 31 for the presidency and the national parliament.
