On Sunday July 14, 2013 the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice (MECAWI) joined with other organizations at the Pingree Statue at Grand Circus Park located on Woodward Avenue at Adams, downtown. A rally was held to condemn the criminal justice system in the United States for the denial of justice for African Americans.

During the Winter of 2012, millions of African Americans and their allies across the U.S. demonstrated demanding justice for 17-year-old African American Trayvon Martin. The police and prosecutors in Seminole County, Florida had no intentions of arresting or indicting Zimmerman in the unprovoked murder of Trayvon Martin who was merely walking through his neighborhood in Sanford, Florida.

The acquittal of Zimmerman sent a clear message to the African Americans and other oppressed peoples in this country: it tells all of us that the system of law-enforcement and criminal justice does not respect the lives of people of color and that people should not expect justice from this racist state.

MECAWI will continue to protest this unjust verdict along with people throughout the country and indeed the world. The organization is calling on all concerned and conscious people to join in demanding JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON! INDICT THE RACIST SYSTEM!
