US still undetermined on Morsi's removal: White House spokesman
Ahram Online, Wednesday 10 Jul 2013
The Obama Administration still has not determined if Egypt's transfer of power is a coup, says White House press secretary
The White House said on Wednesday that it will take time to determine whether to call the Egyptian military's move to dismiss President Mohamed Morsi in response to unrelenting public pressure last week a coup. The US administration also called on the army to show restraint.
When asked whether the US administration was nearing a decision on the characterisation of the process of removing Morsi from the presidency, White House spokesman Jay Carney said, "We are assessing how the authorities behave and how to deal with the current situation."
The United States plans to deliver four more F-16 fighter jets to Egypt in the coming weeks, US defence officials told Reuters on Wednesday, in spite of the military-backed overthrow of the country's elected president.
"There is no current change in the plan to deliver F-16s to the Egyptian military," one US official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
