High on the agenda was the outcome of a recent Paris meeting between Libya’s Prime Minister Fayez Al-Serraj and the divided country's eastern commander Haftar

Egypt’s Army Chief of Staff Mahmoud Hegazy met with Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar in Cairo on Sunday to discuss the latest developments in Libya, including the results of a recent Paris meeting between Libyan factions, Egypt's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Hegazy, head of the Egyptian committee assigned to mediate between the Libyan factions, praised Haftar’s efforts to fight terrorism in Libya. He also highlighted the importance of working together to create a unified Libya that supports security and stability and is free of extremism.

Haftar, meanwhile, stressed his appreciation and that of the Libyan people for Egypt's efforts to resolve the nation's crisis and reconcile Misrata with eastern Libya, the foreign ministry statement added.

The duo also discussed future efforts to rebuild the country, which slid into conflict after the ousting of long-time Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with rival governments and parliaments now in the west and east.

In late July, Libya’s Prime Minister Fayez Al-Serraj and the eastern commander Haftar met in Paris in talks chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron. The two Libyan leaders committed to a conditional ceasefire and agreed to work towards holding elections next spring.
