Clashes on Tuesday between student protesters and security forces at Cairo, Al-Azhar and Fayoum universities injure 36, health ministry says
Thirty-six people were injured during clashes between students and police at several Egyptian universities on Tuesday, the health ministry has said.
The toll resulted from violence in three governorates: Cairo, Giza and Fayoum, the health ministry added.
Clashes broke out at Cairo University between students protesting the death of a colleague, allegedly by police, and security forces, which fired teargas to disperse them.
There was fresh violence between police and pro-Morsi students at Al-Azhar University in northeast Cairo.
The students were protesting a recent police crackdown on Morsi supporters and the arrests of their colleagues during earlier demonstrations.
Protesters hurled stones at police stationed outside the university gates. Police used teargas to disperse them.
Some students suffered birdshot injures, according to Al-Ahram Arabic news website.
Scuffles were also reported between pro-Morsi students and police at Fayoum University, south of Cairo.
Prosecutors ordered the detention for 15 days of 27 Al-Azhar University students, Al-Ahram reported.
The interior ministry said 15 "rioters" had been arrested over clashes at both Cairo and Al-Azhar universities.
University campuses have become the scene of frequent demonstrations in support of former president Mohamed Morsi, who was deposed on 3 July by the army amid mass protests.
Two students at Cairo and Al-Azhar universities have died during recent protests.
The authorities launched a broad clampdown on Islamists following Morsi's removal, killing hundreds and arresting thousands of others -including most leaders of his Muslim Brotherhood movement.
