JOHANNESBURG – Ballot counting appears to be underway after a 10-hour voting session at the ANC’s 54th national conference, with some saying the voting process has been completed.
Delegates from Gauteng were the last to vote to elect the party's new leaders on Monday morning.
The process wrapped up as outgoing ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe was delivering his final organisational report at Nasrec in southern Johannesburg.
The ANC called for delegates to remain patient while the electoral commission counts the votes. The party says the commission should be given space to do its work properly.
The ANC has also emphasised the importance of delegates accepting the outcome of the conference once results are announced.
ANC Member of Parliament Mondli Gungubele says that while he supports Cyril Ramaphosa, he will respect any outcome.
He is calling on other ANC members to do the same.
“When an organisation has got cracks, sometimes there can be debates about common sense issues. It tells you the organisation is not united.”
