The Iranian Army has denounced the recent "foolish" US move to recognize Israeli-occupied Jerusalem al-Quds as the "capital" of the Tel Aviv regime, saying the United States and Israel are responsible for escalating tensions in the Middle East.

"The foolish and fresh move by the White House leaders to officially recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as the capital of the fake Zionist regime [of Israel] is a new plot to violate the rights of the Muslim Palestinian people," the Iranian Army said in a statement on Friday.

It added that the decision by US President Donald Trump aims to make up for the disgraceful defeat of the policies of the global arrogance and its allies in the region, particularly the collapse of Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.

It is a serious plot and act of adventurism against other nations in the region, the statement said.

"Undoubtedly, this provocative and unwise move by the US government is a blatant violation of international organizations' resolutions and will not only fail to help [promote] regional peace and stability, but will also lead to intensification of tensions," the Iranian Army added.

It emphasized that the vicious plot by hegemonic powers at the current juncture is the result of the "reconciliatory stance of certain reactionary Arab countries in the region."

The oppressed and resilient Palestinian people and forces of the resistance front would achieve a final victory over the US and Israeli regime, the statement pointed out.

The US president on Wednesday defied global warnings and said Washington formally recognizes Jerusalem al-Quds as the “capital” of Israel, and will begin the process of moving its embassy to the occupied city, breaking with decades of American policy despite widespread international opposition.

Large groups of Iranians in the capital Tehran and other cities staged massive rallies after Friday prayers to protest against Trump's recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s “capital.”

The protesters were holding up Palestinian flags and banners saying, “al-Quds belongs to Muslims.” They also burned Israeli and US flags.
