Bomb explosion near three embassies in Libya
SATURDAY, MAY 18, 2013 03:13 PM EDT
OTTAWA - Greek foreign affairs officials report no injuries following a small explosion Saturday outside the Embassy of Greece in Libya's capital Tripoli.
Officials say a "low power explosive device" was placed beside a car parked on the street that houses the Greek, Saudi Arabian and Algerian embassies.
"The device was placed on the side of the road opposite the Greek Embassy," officials said in a statement. "There was no injury or damage caused to the embassy building from the explosion."
No one has claimed responsibility for the blast that came on the same day armed groups used bombs and a rocket-propelled grenade to attack military posts in Benghazi, a city in eastern Libya.
Bombs also exploded outside two police stations in Benghazi earlier this month and the French embassy in Tripoli was bombed last month.
Libya's counter-revolutionary western-backed government has struggled to contain violence from Islamists and other armed groups that helped overthrow the former Pan-African leaader Moammar Gadhafi almost two years ago.
