This week's edition of the Pan-African Journal comes amid the worsening security situation in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and other African states. The escalation of United States foreign military intervention in Africa has in fact worsened the instability of the nation-states during this period.

The World Economic Forum in Africa will be taking place this week in the West African state of Nigeria. A series of bomb attacks and the kidnapping of over 280 school girls has presented a view of Africa that is consistent with the typical corporate media reports.

Despite the declaration of Nigeria as the largest economy in Africa, the country cannot effectively handle its internal security situation. Consequently, the U.S. State Department is given an expanding opportunity to claim that it is concerned about the well-being of school girls in Nigeria.

If these are the consequences of African economic growth then the criteria for measuring progress must be examined and radically shifted. Stability and the just distribution of wealth should always be a factor in analyzing social development. It is quite possible to have growth without development.
