CAPE TOWN – African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) president Bathabile Dlamini has used the league's prayer service ahead the state of the nation address to campaign for former African Union Commission Chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

The league prayed for President Jacob Zuma and Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete at the service in Phillipi in the Western Cape.

Zuma will address the nation at 7pm on Thursday, about government’s programme for the year.

In the beginning, the service was characterised by church songs, as the African National Congress members prayed for peace in the National Assembly on Thursday.

Then the ANCWL president took to the stage and spoke about unity in the organisation before defying the party again by speaking on succession.

“That is why, as the women’s league we believe we must have a woman president. We want a woman who will make South Africans respect the ANC.”

Just last Sunday, Dlamini used a church service in Johannesburg to campaign for Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma despite admitting that she was not allowed to do so.
