ADDIS ABABA, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia and the United Nations jointly launched on Friday a 280.4 million U.S. dollars relief appeal for lifesaving interventions.

The appeal was launched by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and the Ethiopian National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC).

In a press statement, UNOCHA said the funds are needed for the next six months, focusing on priority areas including emergency health services, water and sanitation facilities, access to education and improvements in basic living conditions.

The joint UNOCHA-NDRMC relief appeal will mainly focus on the border regions of Ethiopia's Oromia and Somali regional states, where communal conflict has seen around 1 million people get displaced.

The 280.4 million dollars relief appeal also in part targets the requirements of 7.88 million people in Ethiopia who need emergency food aid.

Recent successive failed or under-performing rains mainly in southern and eastern parts of Ethiopia, an increase in conflict-related displacement in the border areas of Ethiopia's Oromia and Somali regions, and conflict induced drought conditions, has left 7.88 million Ethiopians in need of urgent food aid.
