PRETORIA - The High Court has heard that Ahmed Timol was murdered in order to cover up his brutal torture and assault at the hands of the security branch.

This was among the submissions delivered during the closing arguments in the inquest into the anti-apartheid activists’ death.

Timol died in 1971 after falling from the 10th floor of John Vorster Square Police Station, the police claimed he committed suicide.

Advocate Howard Varney described the investigation into Timol’s death as a brazen cover up.

“The investigation into this particular case was carried out not just in a sloppy manner but in a manner designed not to reach the truth, in a manner designed to conceal that truth and protect the security branch officers concerned.”

He says Timol was murdered.

“He was brutally tortured, he was close to death. Probably in a comatose state. To avoid another situation where a detainee such as Salim Essop is rushed to hospital from John Vorster Square, the suicide was constructed.”

Varney says the original inquest finding must be reversed.
