14 opposition parties and coalitions are demanding the resignation of the government of President Faure Gnassingbe and the holding of multi-party democratic elections.

Several leading figures in the resistance movement were sentenced to prison while others are losing their lives.

The regional ECOWAS is reluctant to get involved due to the conflicts of interest exemplified in the chairmanship being held by Gnassingbe.

France and the U.S. have made cautious statements calling for dialogue between the opposition and the incumbent regime.
