This weekend we commemorated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. whose 85th birthday is recognized as a federal holiday in the United States. We examine key aspects of his political and social development during the 1950s and 1960s.

In Detroit the MLK Committee hosts an Annual Rally & March in honor of the peace and social justice legacy of Dr. King, the martyred Civil Rights and Anti-War spokesman and leader. The event his held at Central United Methodist Church where Dr. King delivered Lent sermons every year between 1958 and the year he was assassinated, 1968.

This year the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer constitutes the theme. We will pay special tribute to Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

Detroit today is the epicenter of the economic crisis inside the U.S. The current state of emergency management and bankruptcy has drawn international attention.
