Today is a day of remembrance. For the first time we are not accompanied by the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro, but we feel his presence as always, hoisting the banner of dignity.
These the words of eighth-grade pioneer Naomi Shuman Cabrera, who spoke this morning during the national act to mark the 64th anniversary of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes garrisons, held in the provisional Plaza of the Revolution in the Hermanos Cruz neighborhood of Pinar del Río.
Before the triumph of the Revolution, Pinar del Río was a poor province, the student said. She also noted the high illiteracy rate and lack of health care at the time. However, “the compassion of the Revolution reached every part.”
I want to thank Fidel and the continuers of his work, she said, adding that today all Cuban children and young people have the opportunity to study for free, regardless of race, background, or religious beliefs.
Naomi also recalled the National Hero of Cuba, José Martí, the Heroic Guerrilla Che Guevara, and Fidel, when in this very same square 17 years ago he said: “The prestige of the imperial policy will so crumble that not even its dust will remain.”
She maintained that the Cuba of today is that in which young pioneers feel “happy, safe”; which offers access to new technologies, virtual libraries, computer labs, where there are schools for the disabled, where each student has a teacher.
She emphasized that all members of the José Martí Pioneers’ Organization are committed to follow the steps of the generation that fought to make these dreams a reality. Comandante, you will be proud of our people, she concluded.
